Atlantic Risk

Why Windermere is Vulnerable to Atlantic Hurricanes

Direct Atlantic Hurricane Corridor

Windermere is in the direct path of Atlantic hurricanes. Category 3-5 hurricanes bring devastating winds and storm surge.

Large High-Value Homes

Windermere homes average $500k-$2M+. Larger surface area = more wind exposure. Roofs and windows are primary vulnerability.

Lakes & Water Bodies

Proximity to lakes increases storm surge risk and flooding. Hurricane winds push water onto surrounding properties.

Mature Trees

Large oaks and pines throughout Windermere topple in hurricane winds. Trees crash through roofs, damage homes, cause water intrusion.

Aging Roofs

Many Windermere homes have roofs 20-30+ years old. Old roofs fail in hurricane-force winds. Replacement urgent before season.

Pre-Season Checklist

Hurricane Preparation Checklist (Before Season Starts)

Complete this checklist by June 1st, before Atlantic hurricane season peaks:

Roof InspectionHave licensed inspector check roof condition. Missing shingles? Damaged flashing? Age? Replace now if roof is 20+ years old.
Trim TreesRemove dead branches within 15 feet of home. Trim tree limbs hanging over roof. Remove dead/dying trees entirely.
Secure Gutters & DownspoutsEnsure gutters are secure. Loose gutters become airborne in wind. Downspouts must drain away from foundation.
Check Window & Door SealsWindows/doors are wind entry points. Check weatherstripping, seals, and lock integrity. Replace damaged seals.
Install Hurricane ShuttersPlywood or rolling shutters protect windows. Can't board up during a hurricane — do this before season.
Backup Power PlanGenerator, fuel, battery backups. Know how to safely operate generator. Fuel goes bad after 6 months.
Document Home ValuePhotos, video, inventory of contents and valuables. Needed for insurance claims. Store backup copies off-site.
Review InsuranceConfirm adequate coverage. Is deductible reasonable? Do you have flood insurance? (Standard homeowners doesn't cover flood).
During the Storm

During a Hurricane: What to Do

1

Evacuate if Ordered

If evacuation is ordered, leave immediately. Don't wait. Your life is more valuable than your home.

2

Shelter in Place if Safe

If told to shelter in place, go to interior room away from windows. Bathrooms or closets are safest — small rooms are strongest.

3

Don't Use Elevators

Power loss is common. Get trapped in an elevator during a hurricane. Use stairs only.

4

Turn Off Water & Gas

If your home is flooding or catching fire, turn off water and gas. Know where shutoffs are BEFORE the storm.

5

Don't Look Outside or Go Out During Storm

Flying debris is deadly. Windows breaking, trees falling — windows are where dangerous objects come through.

After the Storm

Post-Hurricane Recovery: First 48 Hours

Safety Assessment

Wait for official all-clear before entering home. Check for gas leaks, electrical hazards, structural damage. If unsafe, don't enter.

Take photos/video of all damage BEFORE cleanup. This is critical for insurance claims. Include wide shots + close-ups.

Call Insurance Immediately

Report the claim within 24 hours. Provide documentation you've taken. Adjuster scheduling is critical.
